President of the Los Angeles City Council, Nury Martinezresigned 24 hours after a leaked audio recording revealed she and Councilmember Kevin de León made racist comments, according to ABC 7. If you recall, an October 2021 chat was made public on Sunday when an anonymous user posted it on Reddit. Nury calls Congressman Mike Bonin’s Negro son “little monkey” in Spanish. As well as referring to his misconduct during a parade by commenting “This kid needs to be beaten.”
Nury resigned this morning and in a statement she expressed that she was “really embarrassed”. The statement read, “I am responsible for what I said, and there is no excuse for those comments. I am very sorry. I sincerely apologize to those I have hurt. in her own words: to my colleagues, their families, especially to Mike, Sean, and your son.” She continued, “As a deep believer in empowering communities of color, I realize my comments undercut that goal. In the future, mediation will be my priority. I reached out to many of my Black colleagues and other Black leaders to express my condolences for our healing. “
Nury concluded her speech by saying, “I beg forgiveness from my colleagues and from the inhabitants of this city that I love so much. In the end, my apologies are not the most important; it will be the actions I take from this day forward. I hope that you will allow me to modify. Therefore, effective immediately, I hereby resign as President of the Los Angeles City Council.”
Many called for Nury Martinez, Gil Cedillo and Kevin de León to step down, including President Joe Biden. NPR reported that White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described their actions as “unacceptable” and “appalling”. Additionally, she said that President Biden believes all three council members should give up their seats.
