NEW DELHI: Less than a quarter of rural households and less than two-thirds of urban households in India say they have tap water to drink in their homes or yards, according to a report just released by the Bureau of Statistics Published country. About 70% of rural households said they have a dedicated latrine while 21.3% said they do not have a latrine, separate latrine or otherwise. The survey, known as the Multi-Indices Survey (MIS), is part of the 78th round of the National Sample Survey (NSSO). The survey covers 1.6 thousand households in rural areas and another 1.1 thousand households in urban areas.
During the survey period, 16.1% of males and 43.8% of females aged 15-24 did not attend school, did not work, and did not receive training. Less than half of people 18 years of age and older have exclusive access to cell phones. The report confirms progress in financial inclusion in India with almost 90% of those surveyed saying they have a separate or shared account with a bank, other financial institution or mobile money service provider. motion.
Although the penetration rate of piped drinking water is very low in many states, more than 95.7% of residents say they have access to “improved drinking water.” This is defined as water drawn from packaged bottles, tap water entering a home, yard or neighbours, public taps, pipe wells, hand pumps, covered wells, tanks, etc.
Among the great states, Assam, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Odisha have some of the poorest access to drinking water for both rural and urban households. Kerala, Manipur, Nagaland and Jharkhand have less than 90% access to improved drinking water. Similarly, Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha have the lowest percentage of rural households using specialized toilets. For all other states, the percentage of such households is more than 60%. In the same three states, more than 30% of households do not have a toilet.
In Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal, Nagaland and Madhya Pradesh, for more than 70% of households, firewood is the main source of energy for cooking. These states along with Jharkhand have less than 25% of households using LPG for cooking – the lowest among all states and UT.
Among the major states, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Kerala and Delhi had the highest proportion of males aged 15-24 who were not in school, employed or trained (more than 20%) at the time of the survey. For women, the rate is highest in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Gujarat, West Bengal and Bihar.
In the exclusive use of mobile phones, both Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh have less than a third of their population aged 18 and over having exclusive access to mobile phones.
