NRL: Adam Elliott is ready to pay back his faith after he was given the ‘last shot’ by the Canberra Raiders

Adam Elliott knows he’s lucky he doesn’t have to work on a construction site or find himself in long lines outside Centrelink.

After 101 level one games with Canterbury, his on-field performance was never an issue – it was his off-field behavior that has put him in constant conflict over the past few years, especially when alcohol related.

Fed up with his drunken antics, the Bulldogs and Elliott struck a deal that saw the release of his multimillion-dollar NRL contract last year.

Realizing his talent if he kept it straight and narrow, the Canberra Raiders swooped in, offering the 27-year-old a one-year contract.

The deal had a multitude of terms, and Elliott knew he couldn’t struggle in the nation’s capital.

He impressed during grueling off-season training with Dien May Xanh and is well aware he won’t get another shot if he gets crammed.

“I just want to play my best, last year was interrupted by injuries and things off the pitch,” Elliott said ahead of Friday night’s clash with Cronulla at GIO Stadium.

‘I want to be one of the first people Ricky (Stuart) picks every week because he knows what I’m going to do for him.’

Elliott’s blossoming long-term relationship with NRLW star Millie Boyle is another reason to focus.

“I’ve always watched Millie play… she’s definitely tough,” he told NRL.com.

‘I think they are creating waves with three new teams and that can only lead to good things.’

The couple have known each other since they were teenagers after growing up near Bega on the NSW south coast.

Last August, they became embroiled in controversy after being caught ‘intimate’ in the men’s bathroom at a Gold Coast restaurant.

‘Look, all we did was kiss in the bathroom. It was taken out of context. Ms Boyle said at the time it was a big deal about nothing.

Elliott was sidelined for the final two games of Canterbury’s NRL season, pending an investigation from the NRL Integrity Unit into the incident before he was subsequently released.

Bulldogs boss Phil Gould called Elliott’s conduct ‘fifth grade stupidity’.

He also made headlines last February when he was caught kissing the fiancée of his former teammate Michael Lichaa during a night of binge drinking.

In 2018, Elliott also pleaded guilty to revealing himself in an obscene manner in public following a ‘Crazy Monday’ celebration with Bulldogs at the Harbor View Hotel in Sydney.

Elliott and teammate then Asipeli Fine basked on the hotel balcony with panoramic views of the people climbing the Sydney Harbor Bridge.

Both were charged with lewd conduct and the Bulldogs were hit with a $320,000 fine after the men allegedly danced to Neil Diamond’s Sweet Caroline.

The two then each received a good relationship for two years.

Quick Stats: The Raiders beat the Sharks in both of their 2021 meetings. With Jarrod Croker set to start the season in the NSW Cup, Josh Hodgson is likely to captain Canberra on Friday night
