Notre Dame seeks $75 million in media rights to stay independent

With the conference reorganization once again creating upheaval in college football, there has been much speculation that Notre Dame may eventually be forced to end its independence and officially join a Tournaments. That possibility will be raised if a key condition is not met in the negotiations over the television rights.

Notre Dame is seeking at least $75 million a year in media rights from TV partner NBC if it remains independent, by CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd. This would be a significant increase in price, as the school’s current contract with the network averages $15 million per year. That deal runs until 2025, though renewal talks are already underway.

Due to skyrocketing prices, NBC is considering buying “role shows” from the Power Five conference to become a bigger player in the college football media market. The Big Ten and Big 12 have both become candidates for NBC.

The image of Our Lady thrown there is hardly arbitrary. Estimates suggest that Big Ten schools could earn between $80 million and $100 million from media rights in the conference’s next televised deal. If Notre Dame can’t get a similar number, they will essentially have to choose to give up their independence and join a conference or risk being left in the dust financially.

Reports show that at least one conference made it clear that would love to have Notre Dame if they end their independent status. Whether that happens in the end depends on how much NBC might be willing to spend to keep Fighting Irish games on its network.
