Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Mike Brey retiring
Mike Brey’s 23rd season as head coach of Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team will be his last as he will report step down at the end of this season. Brey is the most winning coach in the Fighting Irish and had an overall record of 481-269 since moving to South Bend in 2000. Before coming to Notre Dame, Brey spent five seasons as head coach at Delaware with the final three. His guide to the Blue Hens led to post-season appearances.
Brey was also part of Mike Krzyzewski’s coaching tree, spending eight seasons as assistant coach of the Blues. He coached at only three colleges, moving to Duke after starting his coaching career at Washington D.C.– DeMatha Catholic regional preparation power. Being the right-hand man of Basketball Hall of Fame coach Morgan Wootten kicked off Brey’s coaching career.
Notre Dame is currently 9-10 overall and 1-7 in the game against ACC with their only conference win coming in extra time against Georgia Tech on Jan. 10. Brey led the Fighting Irish to an appearance. post-season in every season while in charge except for four seasons including the cancellation of the NCAA Tournament of 2020. Notre Dame reached the Round of 32 last season, but it was March Madness’s first stop since 2017. Brey is 63 years old and has an overall head coach record of 580-321.
