Nonverbal teen found by California rescue team after hitting rock
A rescuer by hunch has found a speechless teenager lost in the woods of California after hearing rocks crash.
On Sunday, rescuers were called in to find a 16-year-old missing after he was seen walking into the woods in Crescenta Valley Park, according to a Facebook post from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The call also addressed teens with developmental disabilities.
After hours of searching, a rescuer heard what sounded like rocks crashing together. He remembered the boy had a taste for rocks and investigated further, according to the post.
“We were screaming in this canyon, and I heard something echo,” said Steve Goldsworthy, member of the LASD Montrose Search and Rescue Team. told NBC Los Angeles. “Looks like someone took two rocks and put them together.”
The Burbank Police Department airship looked down the canyon and found the teen at 400 feet surrounded by trees and vegetation.

“I saw him basically sitting under an oak tree, three miles from where he was last seen with his mother,” Goldsworthy said.
Rescuers contacted the boy and built a relationship to gain his trust. The teenager was then led up the mountain to safety and released to his family after being treated by medical staff.
“Our department is deeply moved that this incident has had a happy ending,” the post said.
