NCDs are one of the greatest health and development challenges of this centuryAccording to WHO.

Chief among them are cardiovascular diseases, such as heart disease and stroke; cancer; and diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases – as well as mental health conditions.

Together, they cause nearly three-quarters of all deaths in the world, claiming the lives of 41 million people each year.

Report, The invisible numbers: The true extent of non-communicable diseases and what to do about themhighlights the statistics of NCDs to illustrate the true scale of threats and the risk factors they pose.

It also shows how cost-effective and globally applicable interventions can reduce those numbers, saving lives and money.

Country specific portal

Sharing the latest country-specific data, risk factors and policy performance for 194 countries, the NCD data portal brings the numbers in the report to life.

Furthermore, it allows exploration of data on cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory diseases along with their main causes and risk factors, including smoking, dietary unhealthy eating, harmful alcohol use and lack of physical activity.

The portal highlights patterns and trends across countries and allows comparisons across countries and/or within geographies.

Important time

To date, only a handful of countries are on track to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) goal of reducing by one-third the number of premature deaths from NCDs.
