Fritz Hager and Noah Thompson tested positive for coronavirus before the May 8 episode of American Idol. Host Ryan Seacrest announced at the beginning of the episode. He explained that Noah had started feeling sick earlier in the week and would be performing virtual from his hotel room. Fritz’s symptoms started close to the live show, so his rehearsal footage had to be used for two of his performances.
Noah and Fritz made the top seven of the show’s 20th season. All seven artists had to perform twice on the Mother’s Day episode, which would end with two eliminated and only five remaining. The first performance of the night was a viral song on TikTok and the second performance was a song dedicated to the singer’s mother.
Throughout the season, Noah and Fritz won over judges and fans alike. They have been voted on by viewers week after week since the live show started. The remaining five contestants on the show are HunterGirl, Leah Marlene, Jay Copeland, Christian Guardino and Nicolina. Free use of COVID-19 is available all year and can be performed live as planned. The team was mentored by will.i.am this week.
Fritz chose to sing an original song for his viral TikTok track. Although it was only a rehearsal scene, he still impressed the judges with his performance. Fritz plays electric guitar while singing with the band. Although Fritz was not present in person to see it, all three judges gave him a standing ovation. He made a video call and said he was feeling “good,” but was ready to get back on stage.
“I really just lay in bed and slept,” laughs Fritz. “I’m really just out in the cold all day.” Fortunately, he appears to be on the mend, and if he is voted through, hopefully he’ll be back on stage next week.
