No plan to extend deadline for filing income tax returns: Revenue secretary

NEW DELHI: Government is not considering extending the last application date income tax return as it expects most of the gains to come by its due date of July 31, a top official said on Friday. Revenue secretary Tarun Bajaj says more than 2.3 crore of income was filed by July 20 for the 2021-22 fiscal year and the numbers are growing.
Last fiscal year (2020-21), approximately 5.89 crore ITR (Income Tax Return) was filed before the extended due date of December 31, 2021.
“People think it’s customary now for the days to be extended. So at first they were a bit slow to fill in the earnings but now on a daily basis we are getting from 15k. to 180,000. It’s going to go up a little bit to 25,000 to 30,000,” he told PTI.
Typically, return applicants wait until the last day to return their application.
“Last time 9-10% was submitted the day before. Last time we had more than 500,000 (last day of application). This time, I told my people to be ready for 1 crore. (tax returns are filed on the last day),” he said.
According to IT rules, the deadline for filing financial ITRs by individual taxpayers who do not need to have their accounts audited is July 31 of the following fiscal year.
Through ITRone must obey Income Tax Department of India. It contains information about the person’s income and taxes payable for the year.
The Income Tax Department has prescribed 7 types of ITR forms, the applicability of which will depend on the nature, amount of income and type of taxpayer.
The tax office’s new income tax return portal is now very robust to take on the increased payloads.
“So far, there has been no thought about extending the final application date,” he said.
Bajaj said the feedback received from taxpayers is that the return form has become very easy to file and the refund is also done in very fast time.
When some people complained about the difficulty in filing their tax returns, he said 2.3 people filed their returns without any complaints.
He said: “In the past 50,000 people filed daily tax returns and now this number has reached 200,000. I am confident that revenue will increase in the next few days and people will file tax returns.”
Over the past two fiscal years, the government has extended the deadline for filing ITRs to ease compliance for taxpayers battling the covid pandemic.
