No packing their bags yet for Lady Bombers
Lady Bombers are here to fight another day.
Dolly Verzosa is sure of that.
“I didn’t shed a tear just so we’ll finish in fourth,” the outside graduate said after taking Jose Rizal University (JRU) to 25-21, 18-25, 22- 25, 25-20, 15 -9 victory over San Sebastian in Friday’s NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Center.
“Ours [last] Four finals [appearance] was Shola’s legacy [Alvarez, former league Most Valuable Player]. We also wanted to make history,” said Verzosa, who finished with 16 points, including knockdowns, while doing his share of defense with two blocks and 15 digs.
“Both Kia [Melgar] and me, we want to make history so that we will leave a good memory to JRU,” added Verzosa.
Their legacy
Melgar leads the Lady Bombers with 18 points, covering four blocks, while Sydney Niegos adds 15 points, along with three blocks.
Verzosa and Melgar wrote their own chapters in JRU history. Whatever happens, the school will mark its best in women’s volleyball after reaching the semi-finals.
Next up is the Lady Bombers, who had to win their last knockout match against Lyceum to make it to Round 4 of the Finals, is the University of Arellano, the No 2 team having won the last three finishes of this tournament. .
The two teams collided at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Filoil Arena.
The winner will play the undefeated College of Saint Benilde in the Finals of the three teams starting on Wednesday.
JRU set-up Jerry Lyn Laurente made good fouls, delivering 25 excellent serves to her players. Riza Rose has nine points while Lyka Egera adds eight for Lady Bombers.
JRU took a 6-0 lead in the deciding set, but San Sebastian fought back, finishing 9-7. But Lady Bombers scored 5 of the next 6 points to take the lead. San Sebastian saved just one match point before Verzosa delivered a season-long knockdown.
