No Kohinoor Crown For Queen Consort Camilla? Palace Rethink, Claims Report
New Delhi:
Plans for the coronation of the United Kingdom’s Queen Consort using the Kohinoor diamond are being revisited after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) warned that the move would evoke “painful memories” sad about the colonial past”.
According to The Telegraph, Buckingham Palace officials to be review whether Queen Camilla should wear the precious diamond when she and her husband King Charles III are crowned at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
Last worn in 1937 by the Queen Mother, consort of King George VI, the tiara features 2,800 diamonds, with a 105-carat Kohinoor, one of the largest-cut diamonds, on the front.
The BJP has spoken out against the use of the precious diamond it claims to be from India legally.
A BJP spokesman told The Telegraph: “Camilla’s coronation and the use of the jewel in the Kohinoor crown evoke painful memories of the colonial past.” “Most Indians have very little memory of their oppressed past. Five to six generations of Indians have endured many foreign laws for more than five centuries.
“Recent occasions, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the coronation of the new Queen Camilla and the use of the Koh-i-Noor have brought some Indians back to the time of the British Empire in India. “, the spokesperson added.
Reports suggest that the Queen’s coronation could see the Kohinoor diamond separate from the crown or that the new King and Queen could use some other tiara from the Royal collection.
