Taken together, the top three Gilas Pilipinas coaches have 42 Philippine Basketball Association titles.
Tim Cone, the Barangay Ginebra coach who sits as Chot Reyes’ assistant on the national team bench, takes that record 24 championships.
But there is no risk of Reyes losing his position as Gilas Pilipinas’ main decision maker even if one assistant almost triples his title count and another – Jong Uichico – who has many titles. like he has.
“We all get along really well,” Cone said. “Jong is very humble. He reminds me a bit of [Miami Heat coach] Erik Spoelstra, how humble he is. So we get along very well. I’m not the type to want to put my stamp on everything. I’d be happy to do the background and sit in the back seat.”
“We worked together in the last window. We’re not trying to outdo each other. We just play our part. We do our jobs and we give in to each other,” said Uichico.
The respect shared by all three is clearly established that there is no need to draw boundaries or set boundaries around their duties.
“There is really no specific role assigned [in Gilas coaching staff]. It just came,” Uichico explained. “Coach Tim is more or less in charge of the defense. I’m in charge of scouting. Josh [Reyes] responsible for the crime. Of course, Coach Chot is the more holistic person. Needless to say, we perform our roles only with the flow. We just fill in where we think we can help.”

“I don’t have to be the driver,” Cone said. “I’ve driven a lot with Ginebra and that’s a lot. I’m happy to stay on the platform and support whenever I can. So I think it works.
