Gujarat Bridge tragedy: More than 90 people died when the bridge broke

New Delhi:

The person who upgraded the collapsed century-old bridge in the Gujarat city of Morbi had not been given a health certificate by the authorities before reopening, the head of the local city agency told NDTV.

More than 90 people were killed after the bridge collapsed. Eighty people are in hospital with serious injuries and about 200 are missing, officials said.

A private foundation called Oreva renovated the bridge after receiving a government bid. The bridge was closed for seven months for repairs. It was reopened on October 26.

The director of the Morbi city agency, Sandipsinh Zala, told NDTV that the Oreva company had not obtained the health certificate from the authorities before the inauguration of the bridge.

“It was a government tender. Oreva Corporation was supposed to come up with renovation details and quality checks before opening the bridge. But they didn’t. The government didn’t know about it. this,” Mr. Zala said.

Yesterday, in a video, many people were seen on the bridge, jumping and running on it. Cable bridges are seen swaying due to their movement.

Officials said the rescue operation would take place throughout the night. Teams of the army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indian Air Force personnel were on the scene, searching for survivors among the debris.

In the image, some people swam to safety after the bridge broke. Many people were seen clinging to broken bridgeheads. Some people, half submerged, half afloat, screamed for help as those on the banks of the Machhu River tried to help them.
