MANILA, Philippines—NLEX is tapping another former NBA player who will be tasked with filling the void after Jonathon Simmons completes his four games in the PBA Commissioners Cup.
Former Memphis Grizzlies coach Wayne Selden Jr. will arrive in the next day or two to begin the Road Warriors transition after Simmons agreed to play the early stages of the season-ending conference.
Team rep Ronald Dulatre confirmed ahead of NLEX’s take on TNT on Wednesday at Philsports Arena in the Pasig City Selden signing, first revealed by coach Frankie Lim in a televised interview.
The 28-year-old is expected to make his debut on February 8 against Commission’s Cup champion Barangay Ginebra at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Selden was brought in with Simmons preparing to return to China after receiving an offer before launching Road Warriors.
What NLEX can hope for is that Selden can deliver the same pedigree as Simmons has provided.
After failing to improve in the 2016 NBA Draft, Selden played for New Orleans three games in 2017 before being signed by the Grizzlies, where he spent two more seasons.
He was traded to the Chicago Bulls in 2019 before joining the NBA G-League, Israel, Turkey and Italy.
Simmons will play against TNT before wrapping up a short trip on February 4 against the faltering NLEX at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.
