Nissan spokesman Dan Passe said news of Maxima’s demise was first communicated to employees, suppliers and dealers on Wednesday. Engine Authority.
The Maxima is built at Nissan’s plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The automaker will ship just 16,386 units in the US in 2021, compared with 103,777 Altimas during the same period. The two sedans are similarly sized, with the Maxima positioned as the sportier option. The Altima has just been updated for the 2023 model year.
The current Maxima is the eighth generation of nameplates dating back to 1980, and with such a history, we wouldn’t be surprised if the nameplate makes a return, perhaps on a hybrid or electric vehicle in the future, something something suggested by Passe in the comment, “Please stay tuned for future Nissan Maxima news as we power our journeys through exciting vehicles and technological innovation”.
Nissan in 2021 has announced plans to launch 23 electric models across its Nissan and Infiniti brands by 2030, of which 15 will be electric. The automaker aims to have electric vehicles account for 40% of sales by the end of the decade, including some solid state battery pack.
Nissan hasn’t provided many details about its future EV plans, although the automaker has confirmed plans to build a pair of electric cars at its plant in Canton, Mississippi, starting in 2025. One for Nissan and the other for Infiniti.
