Nintendo’s revocation statement mentioned the group’s violation of community guidelines without going into details, but a Reddit thread from last month — which has been updated with additional information from other sources — details racist behavior by team members on social media and while streaming games. A thread of @adaptability_ (that contains swearing) from June 11 detailed several examples, including the use of racist slurs and multiple instances of comparing black people to apes.
A member of the Jackpot team, Jaredanswered in a Google Doc where he specifically mentioned some instances of racist behavior within the team and apologized for his part. “I know a lot of people look up to us, Jackpot and me personally,” he wrote. “I’m sorry to disappoint everyone.”
The 2024 Splatoon 3 World Championship took place in Japan in April. The Japanese team Phantom Thieves took second place in the tournament. It is currently unclear whether they will be awarded first place after the Jackpot was removed.
