According to a recent report by Bloomberg (opens in a new tab)after a decrease in expected sales for Switch in November to 19 million units, Nintendo has told suppliers it plans to increase production starting in April. While sales of six-year-old consoles are expected to begin to decline, Nintendo has stated that the drop it experienced in late 2022 has more to do with supply issues than lack of demand, according to the report. by Bloomberg.
Problems with sourcing semiconductors and components have widely affected the electronics industry. Although it shortens Switch sales, we also see this affecting production PS5with Sony finally promising wider availability of the next-gen console in 2023.
prepare for the apocalypse
April heralds the start of a new financial year, so it makes sense for Nintendo to change its tactics to pursue new goals at this point. April is also important for another reason. A month later, in May, Breath of the Wild 2 (officially The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom) is set to release – with the highly anticipated sequel set to be one of Nintendo’s most important releases in 2023.
The Switch has always had great sales when it’s lined up alongside major game releases, whether it’s Splatoon 3 or Animal Crossing: New Horizons. So Nintendo may be ramping up inventory in preparation for a sales spike as people get ready to try out the next installment in the Zelda series.
This sales strategy is not unique in any way. Front god of war RagnarokReleased in November 2022, Sony begins increase the output of the units (opens in a new tab) in September. Acknowledging that Ragnarok will be the biggest game of the year, this is the best opportunity to encourage sales of the expensive and hard-to-find PS5. We’re hoping for more Switch copies, and who knows, we might even get a special edition The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Switch as we saw with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
