Nintendo is reportedly investigating claims of sexual misconduct

Nintendo can respond quickly allegations of sexual discrimination and harassment in the US department. One Kotaku source Reportedly shared a company-wide message from Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser revealing that the Switch creator is “actively investigating” claims of misconduct. The company “will always” review claims like these and encourage workers to report violations, Bowser said.

We have asked Nintendo for comment. However, the company has previously responded to incidents elsewhere in the industry. In November, Bowser said the allegations behind Activision Blizzard scandal was “sad and disturbing.” Days later, Nintendo pledged to increase the number of female managers.

Some female game testers told Kotaku that they have faced various forms of harassment and discrimination at Nintendo. Senior testers allegedly made unsolicited advances and comments. Anti-LGBT comments, pay disparities and efforts to suppress criticism are also part of workplace culture, according to the allegations. Female workers are said to be underrepresented at Nintendo in general (37%), and especially among contract game testers (10%).

It is too early to know whether any investigation will lead to sanctions or reform. If accurate, though, the scoop is a reminder that misconduct claims aren’t limited to just one developer. Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft and others must also address concerns – it may reflect cultural issues across the industry.
