Nintendo acquires SRD, a Development Studio it’s been working on for decades
Nintendo has announced that it is acquiring SRD Co. LTD., a longtime development partner who has worked on titles in the series such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario.
If you’ve been paying attention to the video game industry since late, you probably already know that 2022 is so far defined in one word: acquisition.
It started with Take-Two Interactive, the parent company behind the Grand Theft Auto series, announcing back in January that it acquired mobile giant Zynga for almost 13 billion dollars. Then a week later, Microsoft announces that it is acquiring Activision Blizzardthe company behind Overwatch and Call of Duty, for a whopping $68.7 billion, and then two weeks later, Sony reveals they are buying Bungiedeveloper behind Destiny 2, for $3.6 billion.
Nintendo revealed earlier this month that although acquisitions are happening across the industry, it will not change its investment plan. It also revealed that it is not against acquisitions it deems necessary, and that acquiring SRD is the next necessary move for the Kyoto-based company.
SRD was founded in 1979 and has worked closely with Nintendo for decades, as reported by Chronicles of video games. Not only did it work with Nintendo on Mario and Zelda games, but the studio also helped develop the Animal Crossing, Game Builder Garage, 1-2 Switch, and Ring Fit Adventure items. This acquisition is expected to close on April 1, 2022, and at the time of this writing, a price has not yet been named.
Nintendo said in a statement that the acquisition of SRD will “serve to strengthen SRD’s management base and ensure the availability of software development resources for Nintendo,” according to Nintendo. Chronicles of video games.
Today’s news about this acquisition is the first of the following Nintendo buys developer Luigi’s Mansion 3, The Next Level Gamein January of last year.
