Nicolas Cage on Marvel movies: “I don’t have to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage”

Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage named himself after a Marvel character, but the actor himself has no ambitions to star in a Marvel movie. During a Legend and Breakthrough Award acceptance speech at the recent Miami Film Festival, Cage bluntly said, “I don’t need to be in the MCU, I’m Nic Cage,” according to Diversity.
Cage almost starred in a DC movie, Superman Lives, and even got images of Cage in a Superman suit are available online. But it was not successful in the end.
In his keynote, Cage said that he would never take Marvel movies lightly, given his personal history with the series. But he understands how upset some people are about the state of superhero movies today.
“I have to be cool about the Marvel movies, because I named myself after a Stan Lee character named Luke Cage. What am I going to do, put the Marvel movies down? Stan Lee is the surrealist dad. my real name. He named me,” Cage said. “I understand what frustration is. I get it. But I think there’s room for everyone. I’m watching movies like Tár. I’m watching all sorts of art-house and independent-directed films. I think there’s plenty of room for everyone.”
Cage, grandson of famous director Francis Ford Coppola, was born Nicolas Kim Coppola before changing his name to Nicolas Cage in honor of Marvel character Luke Cage.
Cage won the Oscar for the 1995 film Leaving Las Vegas, even though he never paid for that movie. He then starred in the blockbuster series National Treasure and hit movies like The Rock and Face/Off. He will be seen next as Dracula in Renfield.
