NHS staff pub singer banned from the road after driving home more than twice over the legal limit at 4am

A pub singer working for the NHS has been banned from the streets for almost two years after she was caught driving home from a 4am performance twice the alcohol limit.

Hannah Smith, 33, from Cheadle Hulme, near Stockport, Greater Manchester, was caught twirling around on the road with a warped wheel in her Ford Focus which had previously completed her stint as DJ cum Singer singing karaoke at a club.

The NHS day manager and nightlife business owner burst into tears at Tameside Magistrates Court in Greater Manchester after she was banished from the road for 20 months and fined £276.

She pleaded guilty to driving with 85 micrograms of 100-milliliter breath alcohol – more than double the legal limit of 35mg.

“The defendant appeared to be unable to control the vehicle, so he activated the emergency device that brought him to a halt,” Mr Khan said.

‘As she got out of her car, she told staff that someone had hit her car causing her to swerve.

‘Her speech was stammered and the smell of intoxicants wafted from inside the car.

‘According to what she told him and his observations, he requested a roadside breath sample and the result was 94 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of roadside breath.’

Mr Khan told the court that Smith was later arrested and taken to the police station to examine the evidence.

He added: ‘The lowest reading of 85 micrograms of alcohol in 100ml of breath is well above the legal limit.

‘The defendant has no criminal record, so he loses his humanity. The policeman observed her changing direction on the street. An example of poor driving is a more serious trait. ‘

In addition to a travel ban and a £276 fine, Smith was ordered to pay an additional £195 in costs and surcharges to the victim.

‘She thought she was fine with driving. She had about three drinks but said she was hit by another car which caused the wheel to buckle which is why the car veered off course,’ he said.

‘She gave that explanation at the scene. She smells of drinks and fully adheres to the drinking driving protocol. ‘

Mr Green went on to mention that Smith’s day-to-day life will be severely affected as she uses the car to ‘come to work for the NHS’.

He confirmed that she was performing in nearby Hazel Grove the night she was stopped.

‘She wasn’t about to drive home but she realized she made the foolish decision to get in the car because she needed to get the car back home for her parents, who would meet her brother who was lying in bed. Salford Hospital,’ he said.
