NFL’s ratio of Black QBs to Black head coaches is all wrong

Marlin Briscoe is smiling in heaven. Doug Williams probably has a grin on his face. The first black quarterback to start in NFL history – Briscoe – and the first black quarterback to start and win the Super Bowl MVP – Williams – are giants that Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts’ Philadelphia is standing on the shoulder. And between Rihanna’s mid-half performance and the fact that we’re about to see how history is made Two Black midfielders take center stage in sport’s biggest game — you might consider it fateful, since it all happens during Black History Month.

However, don’t let this moment distract you from the fact that Black coaches are still getting a rough deal at a time when Black quarterbacks are being raised more than ever. Two things can be true at the same time, this is why this moment is a moment of joy but also of anger.

Sixteen years after we watched Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy make history as the first two Black head coaches to appear in the Super Bowl, we’re watching Mahomes and Hurts do it for the quarterbacks. Black skin. But since that February 2007 date, things for Black coaches have seemed to fall apart as they have improved for Black quarterbacks.

Eleven Black Midfielders start Week 1. Now compare that to three Black coaches who had jobs when the season started – Mike McDaniel doesn’t count, because he chooses to identify as one. human with a black father.

When Lovie Smith was fired in Houston, three became two. And as we wait for the remaining tenants to be made, there is no track record or feeling that anything will be done in the next few weeks to dramatically improve these dismal numbers. We’re at a point where the league, owners and fans agree to let a Black man be their quarterback – but not their coach.

Over the years, the trajectory for Black quarterbacks has steadily risen in a way that didn’t happen to the Black trainer. By the time we start, that means eight Black quarterbacks have already started in the Super Bowl. It is a direct result of evolution over the years. What was started by Fritz Pollard, Briscoe and Williams led the way for Michael Vick to become the first black quarterback to be picked No. 1 and Steve McNair to become the first black quarterback to win an MVP – followed by Mahomes and Lamar Jackson.

Progress on the pitch, not on the sidelines

However, this kind of progress is not something we’ve ever seen with Black coaches. Around this time last year, there were only two Black head coaches in the league – Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh and David Culley in Houston. As we all know, Culley will be fired after one season by the Texans and will be replaced by Smith, another Black coach will be fired after a year of solitary work. Brian Flores’ class action lawsuit (starring Ray Horton and Steve Wilks) is still hovering over the league. But, you wouldn’t know it the way that Wilks couldn’t keep his temporary card – it’s a death sentence for black coaches – with the Carolina Panthers though did a great job.

In 2000, Dennis Green (Minnesota) and Dungy (Tampa) were the only ones two full-time Black head coaches in the NFL. Twenty-three years later, we’re in the same place, but worse. XFL is just a few weeks away from restarting and eight-team league had four Black head coaches. It’s a jarring indicator of how big this problem is, despite what Todd Bowles thinks.

“I think as soon as you stop making a big deal out of it, so will everyone else,” one of the league’s two Black coaches boldly said at the start of the season.

In less than two weeks, a major Black tournament will make history as two Black quarterbacks play in a game that will feature pre-match and halftime entertainment. by Black performers for a month dedicated to recognizing the contributions Black people have made to this country. It will be a fun occasion.

However, while you are enjoying the game, I ask your permission to ask the company that you will continue on that day. “If the NFL, America, and the world can accept all of this Blackness, why can’t they accept Black coaches?” And while you’re waiting for people to answer that question, realize that “end racism” is engraved on the pitch throughout the season.
