The NFL is looking for a technology-driven game plan to help predict—and prevent—player injuries on the field.

The league announced Thursday that it’s teaming up with Amazon Web Service on the NFL Contact Detection Challenge, a competition that designers will use machine learning and computer vision to find new ways to measure and analyze player exposure time, duration, and frequency during NFL games.

The NFL said in a release that the data collected will improve the league’s ability to better predict injuries and help prevent them — and potentially lead to adjustments to the rule — based on information collected.

“Quantifying the risk of injury that a player faces in every possible situation in the game is an important step towards understanding how we can reduce that risk and ultimately prevent injury.” Jennifer Langton, NFL Senior Vice President of Health and Safety Innovation. “By attracting participants with a wide range of expertise, this challenge will help us understand which game scenarios have high exposure. This could inform rule changes to improve the game.”

The challenge, announced at the “AWS re:Invent” conference in Las Vegas, will begin December 5 with entries submitted on a website run by Kaggle, a leading platform for competitions. data science exam, organization. The top finishers will be announced in March, with the first entry receiving $50,000.
