Newlyweds escape war in Afghanistan and start life in America

• The couple were supposed to get married in Afghanistan last August, but the Taliban came to town.
• They fled the country and along with 85,000 others escaped the yoke of the Taliban to find a home in the US
• Seven months later, the couple is resettling and trying to figure out life in a new country.

INDIANAPOLIS – Sulaman and Arzo Akbarzada battled the bone-chilling February cold and trudged through ankle-deep snow to catch a bus Monday morning, then another and then an Uber, all to go to a bakery in the warehouse to make bagels.

Navigating the sidewalks that still hadn’t been cleared, Arzo relied on Sulaman for support. They huddled for their coats, guided by fluorescent streetlights and the glow of a map on his phone.
