New York to ban new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2035, gradually tightening emissions standards for ICE vehicles: All the details

State Governor Kathy Hochul said New York introduced a plan on Thursday to require all new vehicles sold in the state by 2035 to be zero-emissions.

After signing the law last year, Hochul announced officials are putting on their “gas pedals” after being required by federal law to wait for California to pass its own legislation.

California ruled in August that a growing percentage of new cars sold to the state’s 40 million residents must not create chimney pollutants until a total ban in 2035.

Following that decision, Hochul directed the New York government to take regulatory steps to ensure all new passenger cars, pickup trucks and SUVs sold in the state are zero-emissions by 2035.

The directive sets an interim target of 35% of sales by 2026 and 68% by 2030.

“We really have benchmarks that need to be met to show we are well on the way to getting there,” Hochul said in a statement in the city of White Plains.

The regulations will also gradually tighten emissions standards for vehicles with internal combustion engines.

To offset the cost of electric vehicles, Hochul announced additional funding for a buyer rebate program and touted advances in the state’s toll infrastructure.

The state will also receive $175 million (approximately Rs, 1,430 crore) from the federal government for its toll network.

California and New York join jurisdictions around the world that have targeted the polluting auto sector to combat climate change in recent years.

Britain, Singapore and Israel are aiming for 2030, while the European Union wants to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2035.

Last year, the Associated Press report That President of the United States Joe Biden announced a commitment from the auto industry to make electric vehicles make up nearly half of US sales by the end of the decade, and said the US must “move fast” to win the future of US auto manufacturing. world.
