New York has not elected a Republican senator or governor for two decades – but that may be about to change | US News

For more than 20 years Democrats can count on New York, a pro-liberal bastion in their fight with Republicans.

The state has not elected a Republican senator or governor in two decades.

But when the US midterms come out next week, their dominance is at stake.

As a sign they’re in trouble, Democrats are drawing up big guns this weekend

In the closing days of this election, the vice president, president and even the Clintons are among the stars of the party campaigning here.

The votes are going against them.

Their candidate for governor Kathy Hochul could be in trouble.

She’s neck-and-neck with her Republican challenger, Lee Zeldin.

But their problems go deeper.

New York is a contiguous state.

If a pro-Republican red wave occurs here, it is likely to be repeated nationally.

In the suburbs there is a hunger for change.

On the banks of the Hudson River, the sleepy, prosperous town of Nyack is not a Republican stronghold, but residents are dissatisfied with the last two years of Democratic administration.

“I really haven’t seen what the left really does,” waiter Maddux Cale told Sky News.

“I haven’t seen them step up when they say they’re going to step up, and I haven’t seen them do anything really effective to help people.”

“I mean, it’s out of control so how do we not try something else for two years? Just two years.”

How are the midterm elections?

Inflation, cost of living and rising crime are driving voters.

On the subway train heading downtown, New Yorkers told Sky News they were extremely worried about their safety.

“Crime is definitely a problem – on trains and in the suburbs,” said one passerby, who declined to give his name.

“I’ve been in New York for more than 40 years and this is the first time I’ve felt scared when I get to Manhattan,” one female passenger said.

“But it’s not just Manhattan.

“I live on Long Island, a place that was once safe is now unsafe.

“I’m just afraid.”

She said she would still vote Democrat because she did not believe Republicans could do any better.

But there are enough voters thinking about supporting the Republican party that the Democrats are alarmed.

You should expect a solid freestyle crowd at a drag bingo night.

But among the players at Wolf and Warrior Brewery in White Plains, New York, a former Democrat told Sky News he would swing his vote Republican.

“I actually voted for Bill Clinton, so I like Bill Clinton.

“I think he’s good for the economy and good for the market, and after the last couple of years when you see things are happening with things now, I think you have to go in a different direction.”

New York may be changing politically, and that’s causing trouble across the country.

If Republicans can do well here, they will be all over America, too, with all that means for Joe Biden’s administration and party.
