Details of Mayor Adams’ indictment
As reported by CNBCThis unsealed indictment reportedly charges Mayor Eric Adams with criminal conduct related to donations made during his 2021 mayoral campaign.
The Associated Press reported that FBI agents seized Adams’ electronic devices nearly a year ago as part of an investigation that focused, at least in part, on Adams’ campaign contributions and interactions with the Turkish government. Because the charges were sealed, it’s unclear whether they relate to similar issues.
In early September 2024, federal authorities seized equipment from Adams, the school superintendent, two deputy mayors and other confidants inside and outside City Hall. All have denied wrongdoing.
Mayor Adams Responds to Indictment and Charges
After news of the indictment broke, Mayor Eric Adams responded with a challenge. video statementstrengthen his innocence.
“I always knew that if I defended the people of New York, I would be a target — and I have been a target. If I am charged, I am innocent and I will fight with all my might and spirit,” Mayor Adams said.
If Mayor Adams resigns before the end of his term, New York City Public Defender Jumaane Williams will take over as acting mayor, CNBC reported.

Adams, a former NYPD captain, took office in January 2022, positioning himself as a fresh face for the Democratic Party. He pledged a tough stance on crime and pledged to restore the city after COVID-19. But he has struggled with major issues in New York City, including the migrant crisis and subway safety, according to CNN. He has also recently been criticized for his late-night partying and spending on the city’s education.
When asked by a reporter on Wednesday about his possible resignation, Mayor Adams replied, “I am moving forward, not backward.”
