New Toyota Crown launches family of 4 body styles

Toyota on Friday unveiled a Redesigned 16th generation Crown arrives in the United States later this year as a 2023 model, with an appearance to mark the nameplate’s return to these shores after a hiatus from the 1970s.

However, the US-oriented Crown, a premium sedan, is just one of four body styles planned for the latest generation of Crown. The remaining three were previewed as concepts at the launch of the new Crown. These include low-rise sedans (Sedan concept), high-rise hatchbacks (Sport concept) and high-rise wagons (Estate concept).

A date for the release of additional styles was not mentioned, although the first is expected next year. Toyota also hasn’t said if we’ll see any in the US, though both hatch and wagon body styles could become popular here, especially if marketed as a vehicle. crossovers.

We also don’t have any technical details, although the powertrain will likely be shared with the 2023 Crown that was revealed on Friday. Two powertrains have been announced, both hybrids with all-wheel drive, where an electric motor powers the rear axle. The standard powertrain uses a 2.5-liter inline-four as the internal combustion component, while the more powerful setup swaps out with a turbocharged 2.4-liter inline-4. The second engine will provide a total maximum capacity of 340 horsepower.

There have been reports that a plug-in hybrid powertrain is also being worked on for the new Crown. And an electric powertrain is also possible at some point. As it turns out, the Crown hatchback concept is one of the many EV . concepts Toyota presented last December.

Toyota introduced the Crown nameplate in 1955, on the first passenger car developed and built entirely in Japan. At its peak in 1990, Crown’s annual sales were more than 200,000 units, although last year Toyota only sold 21,000 units of the upcoming Crown sedan in Japan, its main market. The addition of new body styles and new markets will help ensure the Crown nameplate lasts for years to come.
