New Tomb Raider movie is reportedly in the works as part of Amazon’s massive plans for an MCU-like franchise

This is clearly a huge deal, with one source telling THR that Amazon’s investment in the Tomb Raider connected universe will reportedly be one of Amazon’s “biggest commitments” after The Lord of the Dead. rings. Amazon is said to have spent $250 million on the Lord of the Rings rights alone, which was used to create the TV series The Rings of Power.

The report says Waller-Bridge, who won an Emmy for Fleabag, is not related to the video game or Amazon’s new Tomb Raider movie.

In addition to Amazon’s reported Tomb Raider projects, Netflix is ​​partnering with dj2 Entertainment on a Tomb Raider animated series.

The Tomb Raider series debuted in 2001 with a film starring Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft. Jolie also starred in the 2003 sequel, The Cradle of Life. The franchise was rebooted in 2018 with Oscar winner Alicia Vikander in the lead role. The film wasn’t very successful in the US, where it earned $58 million, but it made over $200 million in international markets for a totaling $274.6 million against a reported $94 million budget.

The plans were supposed to be ready for a Vikander-starring Tomb Raider sequel, but when the movie rights to Tomb Raider were sold in 2022, Vikander dropped out.

It’s still very early days for the next Tomb Raider movie, so there’s no word yet on who will play Lara Croft in the rumored Amazon movie.
