New research shows middle-aged women are binge drinking more than ever due to stress

New research offers an insight into the lives of middle-aged Australian women as studies show more people are turning to binge drinking than ever before.

Research published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review on Thursday found that one in five women between the ages of 40 and 65 drink too much.

‘Katie’, who has chosen to use a pseudonym, revealed to the ABC how much these statistics really mean for women.

Katie will often drink half a bottle of wine at the end of most days to ‘de-stress’ after struggling with a full-time job and raising two children.

New research has found one in five women aged 40 to 65 drink alcohol and 11.7% will drink an average of two drinks per night (reserve)

She said she started drinking after giving birth to her second child but her habit got worse as the pandemic broke out.

“I feel like I’ve lost control,” she said.

Katie said she feels ‘guilty’ about her drinking and says it makes her anxiety worse and affects sleep but it gives her ‘something to look forward to. ‘

“I feel naked without it,” she admits.

Data were collected from a group of 40,670 women over a 19-year period with surveys conducted every three years.

In 2001, data showed that only 8.8% of women drank an average of two standard drinks per day but by 2019, it increased to 11.7%.

Lead author Mia Miller, a research fellow and PhD candidate at the George Institute for Global Health, says stress is the leading factor for most women living in excess.

“We know more women are entering the workforce today than ever before, but they still have a disproportionate burden of labor in the family,” she said.

‘It is not to blame individuals for their alcohol use.’

The study's authors say alcohol may have more harmful side effects in women, and say stress from work and family environments is likely to be the cause of excessive alcoholism (evidence). stock)

The policy response to increased alcohol use in this group, therefore, requires a holistic approach that includes addressing mental health and stress, while enabling women to relax and enjoy themselves. Socialize without alcohol. ‘

Study co-author Cassandra Wright from the Menzies School of Health Research said women are also at higher risk for long-term effects from alcohol.

Dr Wright told the ABC: “Women experience the harmful effects of alcohol faster and at lower levels of consumption than men.

‘We have to remember that alcohol use is linked to more than 200 diseases and conditions, so this means more women experience harm.’

Research shows that women who don’t have a college degree, are from rural or regional areas, or are single are more likely to engage in harmful drinking.
