New MLB pitch clock is obnoxious

It's hard to miss that pitch meter in broadcasts

The introduction of pitching watches for Major League Baseball was a long-needed change to appeal to younger audiences. We already knew that won’t have a major impact, if any, on attack output, but it will make the game faster paced and easier to watch. Or at least, that’s what we hope it will do.

Friday marks the first day of MLB spring training games with two games between Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals as well as Seattle Marines and San Diego Padres. With these games, MLB fans were introduced to the clock on the field for the first time.

Now look away. I love the idea of the pitching watch. There is no denying the positive impact it will bring. However, the smoke is divine, it’s huge and right in front of us! It attracts a lot of attention from at-bat! It’s terrible!

I know this watch is new to MLB, but there is a flair to implementing it and presenting that information to the fans. When NFL fans watch the games, they always know what time the game clock is. While the numbers don’t shine a yellow light directly into our view, the small image with a countdown timer at the bottom of our screen is more than enough to make fans aware of the situation. In the NBA, the rotating clock is always clearly visible to fans watching from home, even if the clock is not glued to the paint on both ends of the field. That news could be seen as shocking for MLB considering how they’ve presented their watches to the field so far in spring training, but it’s such a glaring change I can’t understand. why didn’t MLB find out before the spring training games started.

Access argument

Now, there are two objections that anyone can make. First, just because this is how it was introduced today, that doesn’t mean that’s where the Open Day watch is located. I certainly hope so, because I don’t know how I can get through a game with those bright numbers on my face. It feels like opening the phone at full brightness in the middle of the night. Maybe I’m so used to broadcasting without numbers that my subconscious hates their presence, but I doubt that’s the case. I can only hope they put the clock somewhere else in all the major League football fields before Opening Day on March 30.

Second argument: how can pitchers see their clocks and know when they need to throw their next pitch if the numbers aren’t placed right in front of them? That’s a reasonable concern, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it. In the video above, we see that the pitcher never stops throwing before the clock hits five seconds. That may not seem like a lot of time, but it’s considering the full pitch meter is only 20 seconds. Considering the penalties for breaking the pitching clock are quite severe, I suspect that most pitchers will let the clock get very close to zero. You cannot leave such decisions at the discretion of the referee.

Furthermore, just because the clock isn’t right at the pitcher’s nose doesn’t mean the pitcher won’t be able to see it. Are you telling me that if the clock shifts a few more meters to the left or to the other side of the plate, the vase will be lost? Are not. As long as they can see it easily and it’s not directly behind the pitcher on deck, the pitcher should be fine. As long as the position of the clock is consistent from ballpark to ballpark, there shouldn’t be any problems.

Despite everything I’ve said, I think it’s imperative that fans know about the clock on the field when they watch games, but that needs to be an additional image on the banner at the bottom of the screen, not not a huge set of numbers that make up 20 percent of the game we’re trying to see. Place it just above the count in that image and have it appear as soon as the clock hits 15 seconds. It’s an easy fix, which I’m sure all MLB fans can support. The league has over a month to make changes, so get it done.
