New Met Police chief Sir Mark Rowley promises to be ‘ruthless’ in kicking out corrupt officers | UK News

Scotland Yard’s new commissioner has promised to be “ruthless” in kicking out corrupt, misogynist and racist police officers, but admits he will need help.

Sir Mark Rowley wrote in an open letter: “I have assumed leadership of an organization that has been too weak to receive honest and dedicated mass underminers who are determined to serve public service.

“And I have set out how I will ruthlessly remove from this organization the corrupt officers that include racists and misogynists.

“During my first two weeks, I searched for people who wanted to make the Met better whether from within or through the support of Londoners.”

Sir Mark took charge of the Metropolitan Police three months after it was put in special measures by the police watchdog for a catalog of failures and scandals.

Inspector Constabulary and the Queen’s Fire & Rescue Service said the force had let the public down by not recording many charges, failing to identify repeat victims and being slow to respond to 999 calls .

The Met has also been exposed for its culture of incompetence, in which officers swapped racist and deviant text messagesand others took pictures and swapped body image of two murdered sisters.

Sir Mark wrote in the letter on LinkedIn: “I need and want to hear from those we have let down, from our communities in London and in the Met.

“Constructive anger, delivered in the right ways, can bring about positive change.

“I spoke to a variety of people representing different parts of the Met’s workforce, including associations representing Black, Muslim, Polish and LGBT+ colleagues.

“One group, the Met Black Police Association, I have spoken to three times. I have also spoken to colleagues representing women, who are frequently frustrated.”

Met has been commended for handling major security operation in London after the Queen’s death and in the days leading up to her funeral.

But the new commissioner learns he is under pressure from his political gurus, Home Secretary Suella Braverman and London mayor Sadiq Khan, to produce rapid results in improving the culture and performance of Met.

“I am determined to get the Met culture right, with the support of others informing my plans,” he wrote.

“I have real concerns. I need to make sure I’m talking to the right people, the challengers, the people who care, the people who will call out injustice but also present things as they are. .”
