New Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV caught testing for the first time

The Mercedes-Maybach division is working to bring EQS SUVMercedes’ Top electric SUV. Last year’s concept previewed many design details that could carry over to the production model, and now we have a better idea of what to expect when we see it in metal.

Just like the upcoming upgraded model of Mercedes-Maybach GLS (replacing the EQS SUV’s internal combustion engine), we don’t expect to see any major changes to the bodywork. These spy shots show minimal camouflage, suggesting a vehicle is about to be produced.

Judging by the front end of this test car, we expect to see a new grille shape and headlight design with large lower air intakes.

The wheels of this development are modest compared to Maybach’s history. The concept gets 24-inch wheels and, since the standard EQS SUV gets 21-inch wheels, there are even larger versions available for the Maybach. Mercedes says the side steps really help increase aerodynamic efficiency, so they are likely to show up on the finished product.

The metalwork at the back is almost completely covered. Even so, you can expect to see the Maybach logo on the rear pillars and a nicer taillight for the car.

Underneath the Maybach EQS SUV will be the EVA II architecture underpinning it all EQE and EQS models. It has a 107.8kWh battery – for a range of about 381 miles – and two electric motors that produce 536bhp and 858Nm of torque. That’s enough to get it from 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds.

The EQS SUV will go on sale in 2023, while the luxury Maybach variant is likely to follow a few months later.

Concept Mercedes-Maybach EQS

Mercedes launched its Maybach concept at Munich Motor Show in 2021. The Mercedes-Maybach EQS concept aims to showcase the design of the EQS SUV, along with the ultra-luxury and sustainable treatments that will be available on its Maybach version. The exterior features a large front grille, ultra-slim headlights and Maybach’s signature color scheme with black and red metallic paint. and detailing on the dashboard at the foot of the door sill, along with sensors in the driver’s door that automatically open when the driver approaches. The rear door can also be opened remotely. It’s unknown if these features will make their way to production cars.

Inside, the concept offers some features taken from the latest version S-Class, including a pair of ‘first class’ seats in the rear, plus a premium entertainment system and ‘flower vase’ in the center tunnel. The layout incorporates a storage area that can hold a folding table, a champagne case or a refrigerator. Mercedes says that the extra seat height is allowed by SUV The body allows the calf to rest on a larger seat than on a regular limousine.

Ahead, there is a MBUX Hyperscreen, complete with Maybach-specific graphics, spans almost the entire width of the panel. It incorporates a 12.3-inch OLED screen for the front passengers, giving them their own control and display areas. The system uses eye-tracking technology to comply with screen usage rules; if it detects the driver is looking at the passenger’s screen, it will blur certain types of content that will be banned.
