New Mercedes EQS SUV 2022 introduced ahead of April 19 launch

Mercedes will open its new flagship power pack EQS SUV on April 19, and a newly released teaser image of the vehicle has provided a glimpse of its styling.

Set to compete with BMW iX and Tesla Model XEQS SUV will adopt a smooth, aerodynamically optimized surface, with a new LED running light design. Like other Mercedes electric models, the daytime running lights will extend across the closed front grille, with a slender LED light bar running across the tailgate.

We discovered the great scale of the brand Electric SUV during the pre-production test program, providing a clearer view of its smooth, cabin design language, similar to the brand’s EQS electric car.

Since there’s no engine and transmission taking up space in the chassis, the brand’s engineers pushed the windshield towards the front wheels for more cabin space compared to an internal combustion engine. GLS SUV.

Since the EQS SUV will be offered as a seven-seater, it should offer a solid level of practicality – and good luggage space in its five-seat form.

Some styling elements are familiar to other Mercedes EQ models, such as the lack of surface creases and a pair of bulging bonnets similar to the smaller version. EQA‘S. Digital wing mirrors are a common method for increasing range of use in electric cars, but the pre-production EQS SUV we tracked is equipped with conventional units.

Mercedes design director Gordon Wagener previously discussed the EQS and the upcoming EQE SUVThe Auto Express design brief says: “They will look different in the same way I describe the EQS. They will be more seamless, more integrated, more aerodynamic, more futuristic looking, so it will be a new type of SUV.”

Mercedes has also pulled down the interior linings of the EQS SUV, confirming that it will offer the same 55.5-inch Hyperscreen infotainment system found in the EQS pickup truck. The system uses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 17.7-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch third screen for passengers.

The big screen isn’t the only interior feature taken from the EQS saloon, we can also see similar seats, a steering wheel, a retractable center armrest and the ‘MBUX High-End Seat Entertainment Plus’ package. Includes a pair of 11.6-inch displays mounted on the backs of the front seats.

Mercedes has also confirmed that an even more luxurious Maybach version of the EQS SUV is on the market, which was previewed by a concept at last year’s Munich auto show. Britta Seeger, head of marketing and sales at Mercedes, said in a brand electrification strategy update last year: “What applies to the Mercedes portfolio also applies to the brands. our extremely powerful side – we want to produce electricity. So you can expect a top-of-the-line version of the EQS SUV from Mercedes-Maybach, for example. ”

The EQS SUV should also adopt Mercedes’ Level 3 autonomous driving technology, which allows the vehicle to drive itself with limited driver supervision at speeds up to 37 mph in highway traffic. speed. The UK government recently legalized such systems for road use, meaning there is no longer any regulatory legitimacy for UK buyers.

Mercedes has also announced that battery production for the new EQS SUV and EQE SUV will take place at a new plant in Alabama, USA.

New Mercedes EQS SUV 2022: powertrain and platform

Mercedes has yet to confirm any technical details on the EQS SUV, but we expect it to be based on the same EVA2 platform as the saloon. It will therefore be offered with a similar range of battery packs and electric motors.

For reference, the EQS saloon is currently available in three variants – 450+, 580 4MATIC and AMG 53. The first version features a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle, making 329hp and 569Nm of torque. . The second version has an electric motor on each axle providing all-wheel drive and produces 516hp and 855Nm, with the AMG model producing a monstrous 649hp and 950Nm of torque.

The EQS saloon is available with a 90kWh or 107.8kWh battery pack, the larger offering a maximum range of 478 miles. We’d expect the SUV’s less aerodynamic shape to make a dent in that number, but at least 400 miles of range could be achieved.

There’s also no word on pricing yet but expect it to start well above the EQS saloon’s £99,995 starting price.
