New Mercedes-AMG SL 43 debuts as entry-level roadster

So far, new Mercedes-AMG SL Two versions of the V8 are already available, but the 2+2 roadster will now also be offered in four-cylinder form for the first time, bearing the name SL 43.

Despite halving the number of cylinders, the new variant is set to pack a punch thanks to an electric turbocharger – a world first for a production car, according to Mercedes, and come from it Formula 1 engine technology.

Visually, the SL 43 distinguishes itself from its more powerful V8 counterparts with a smoother-looking front apron and a tweaked rear end with rounded exhaust pipes instead of the square details fitted to the rear. SL 55 and SL 63. Classic SL long bonnet, cabin-rear proportions unchanged, with Mercedes’ signature Panamericana grille at the front and a smooth rounded shape.

For increased downforce, less drag and a more purposeful look, Mercedes offers an Aerodynamics Package for the SL 43, with additional aerodynamic elements on the front and rear bumpers, as well as a steeper angle of attack. for the active rear spoiler. The SL 43 rides on standard 19-inch wheels, with optional 20- and 21-inch alloys also available.

Hidden in the long nose is the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that has been used in other AMG models, such as the A 45 S super bloom. However, in the SL 43, it is equipped with an electric exhaust turbocharger.

The technology is derived from Mercedes’ Formula 1 engines and aims to minimize lag by spinning the turbocharger with the electric motor before it is driven by the exhaust. Even under heavy or heavy braking, the turbocharger maintains increased pressure to better react when the driver accelerates.

The system is linked to the SL’s 48-volt electrical system, which also powers a belt-driven starter/generator that can deliver a brief 14bhp boost – resulting in peak power is 376bhp and 480Nm of torque. Crucially, while these numbers are significantly lower than those of the SL 55 and SL 63, the entry-level car is rear-wheel drive, skipping the 4Matic+ system of its V8 brethren. Drive is sent through a nine-speed MCT gearbox, with the Race Start function allowing for a 4.9-second 0-62mph time. The SL 43 will pop at a top speed of 171mph.

Also, the key point in the SL 43’s dynamic repertoire is its limited weight of 1,810kg. While it may not fit the roadster’s ‘Sport Light’ nomenclature, the SL 43 is 140kg lighter than the SL 55 thanks to a smaller engine and two-wheel drive. With most of the weight saved up front, the SL 43 is possibly the best handling car in the range.

To further improve low-speed agility and safety at higher speeds, the SL 43 can be specified with active rear-wheel steering, while optional adaptive dampers aim to improve performance, offering a wide selection of settings from Comfort to Sport+. An AMG Dynamic Plus package is also available, which offers active engine rack, an electronically controlled limited-slip differential, a 10mm reduction in ride height and a sportier Race driving mode.

The SL 43 adopts the same new architecture developed by AMG for V8 models, allowing for a 2+2 seating arrangement. The structure is 18% stiffer than its predecessor when it comes to torsional stiffness, while The new SL uses a three-layer fabric roof instead of the previous car’s metal folding solution, saving 21kg. It can operate at speeds of up to 37mph and takes 15 seconds to open and close.

It runs Mercedes’ latest MBUX infotainment system and its angle can be adjusted past 20 degrees to avoid reflections when the hood is lowered. There’s also a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a variety of upholstery and trim options, including Artico synthetic leather, nappa leather, and carbon fiber accents.
