New ‘Karate Kid’ Sequel Shows The Magic Of Modern Hollywood Bands


The team behind “Cobra Kai” overcame the near-impossible.

Creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg have revived the decades-old series with love, respect, and creativity. They pay homage to the features of “Karate Kid”, which bring in significant and not so important players, from the original story and inject new blood into the plot.

Result? Five seasons well received by critics and fans alikewith more in production.

How has Hollywood reacted to an unlikely revival? We just learned that a new “Karate Kid” series is on the air.

Sony announced ” the return of the original ‘Karate Kid’ series” with a June 2024 release date.

That is all.

No star or director is currently attached to the document, at least publicly. We don’t know anything about the movie save the title and its connection to the original franchise.

It got worse.

The team behind “Cobra Kai,” who revived the franchise and proved the new “Kid” story still matters, will not be participating in the new film.

Could Hurwitz be acting shy? It seems unlikely, as he responded to a fan on Twitter and did not directly approach the press about his possible relationship with the film.

Sony seems to enjoy marking the “Cobra Kai” team involved in the project. What a perfect way to build interest in a movie that’s still two years away?

Instead, we made a generic announcement with no details that helped the team bring the brand back from the creative abyss that was breaking out of the loop.

Be frank. The upcoming “Karate Kid” movie may or may not be as good or bad as any new movie. We really know nothing about it, from the creative team on site to the finished product.

What is clear, however, is that Hollywood is relying on brand recognition to green light a big motion picture. Sony is so confident in the said brand that they didn’t bother tapping into the “Cobra Kai” team to make that happen.

This move shows an arrogance behind the scenes. Owners of the “Karate Kid” franchise felt it was unnecessary to bring along people who were well versed in the story.

Better they are right.

Most importantly, it points to a misunderstanding of modern popular culture. “Cobra Kai” was a hit on Netflix, but that doesn’t guarantee feature film success. The counter programs appeal to a small fraction of what they did in similar eras.

For example, Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” began its 13th season on September 25, but the series is based on the long-running show. mediocre $31 million.

Sony may regret turning its back on Team “Cobra Kai” while preparing the sequel to a story shaped by 1994’s “The Next Karate Kid.”
