New Horror Victims: Influencers

The Slasher movies used to follow a tried-and-true formula.

If a beautiful young cast is involved, it’s most likely the last thing they do before meeting the film’s villain.

Franchises like “Friday the 13th” and “Halloween” were in vogue hormonal teen. Jason and Michael Myers regularly dices before or after. their capital needs have been met. It’s a classic horror, albeit a long abandoned one.

Now, chances are that if you make a living online, you will soon earn yours (if you are lucky).

Latest example? Netflix’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. The film continues the story that began director Tobe Hooper in 1974, a loosely based on actual events.

“Massacre” follows two “influential people” who visit the Texas town where Leatherface once roamed. The duo has taken over the dwindling retail space, hoping to revive the area with their online popularity and idealism. They soon learn that the town’s most notorious resident can’t wait to take control of that chainsaw again.

Ironically, Dante (Jacob Latimore) quips about “late-stage capitalism” while touring the abandoned town because he’s conspiring to use that economic system to bring it back to life. living.

Why make influencers fall prey to the movie? It’s a quick, identifiable type of character that is easily summoned and exploited. It also suggests something more sinister. These are flawed souls who have not really “earned” their riches. They haven’t researched in years or built a business from scratch. They’ve been keeping up with the latest digital trends, and they’re lucky.

It also makes it easier for them to pray emotionally. We will not support Leatherface beheading a missionary or social worker.

An influencer taking a selfie? Bring it in!

Of course, influencers are not so simple. Some work tirelessly to build their herd, researching marketing trends along the way. For horror movie fans, that thumbnail sketch is more than enough.

However, “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” isn’t the only horror movie aimed at influencers.

  • The movie of the year 2020″Followed“About an aspiring influencer who visits a so-called haunted hotel, hoping it will increase his subscriber count. He soon learns the property is indeed haunted.
  • Previous years “Shoot“Follow a makeup influencer forced to solve a series of puzzles to save the lives of her friends. The film shines on the selfish ways of the main character, something the same story is also continued.
  • Cleaning time” (2019) concerns a rogue exorcist whose digital reputation backfires when one of his actors is actually possessed.
  • Netflix’s “Oranges” (2019) focuses on an OnlyFans style influencer who breaks her own rules and, subsequently, becomes the target of someone hijacking her online identity. .
  • The Jewel of the Year 2020”No one sleeps in the woods tonight“Make reliance on technology a reason to be cut. The teenagers mentioned were forced to hand over their smartphones and explore some of the same pursuits – like staying one step ahead of the movie monsters.
  • Deep house” (2021) takes us underwater as two YouTube stars discover an underwater mansion that holds some deadly secrets.
  • Horror Movies of 2020”Spree“Provides a twist on this emerging formula. The killer in question is an influencer, a Lyft-style driver frustrated by his slow ascent up the digital ladder. So he started killing passengers to increase his social media reach. Of course, it works, that’s part of the disturbing message.

Horror’s latest trend also taps into Millennial outrage. Many of the victims of this new thriller are self-righteous, making us the root of their emergence. Others are urban dwellers who look down on locals. We only see that in the new and recent “Massacre” “Wrong turn” restarts.

The horror of the 80s coincided with the rise of Moral Majority, which may have influenced the narratives of “sex and death” in the play.

Today? Influencers are all angry people, but they also cause a lot of doubt, jealousy, and frustration. Is it any surprise that filmmakers are using them as bait?
