New Covid CDC guidance: what you need to know

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its Covid-19 guidelines on Thursday because, the agency said, the virus carries a lower risk of severe illness, hospitalization and death than it was in early 2020.

Greta Massetti, CDC epidemiologist, said: “This guidance acknowledges that the pandemic is not over, but also helps us move towards a point where COVID-19 no longer has a serious impact on our lives. our daily lives too.”

If you are not up to date with your vaccines and have been exposed to Covid, you do not need to be quarantined anymore. Instead, you should put on a mask for 10 days and get tested on Thursday.

Assuming you test positive for Covid, here is the CDC’s updated guidance:

  • If you have tested positive and have a healthy immune system, regardless of vaccination status, you should isolate for five days. Quarantine may end on Day Six if you are symptom-free or have no fever for 24 hours and your symptoms have improved.
  • After the isolation is over, the agency recommends you wear a high quality mask However, if you come back negative on two rapid antigen tests, you may be able to stop wearing the mask sooner.
  • At least until the 11th, you should limit visiting or being around people who are more likely to suffer severe results from Covid, including the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

People with weakened immune systems or those who have been previously hospitalized with Covid are encouraged to isolate for 10 days and consult their doctor before the end of isolation. Likewise, if you are having difficulty breathing due to the virus, you should isolate for 10 days.

This means Students can now be in the classroom Even if they were exposed to Covid this fall, the CDC said. Students and school staff should still wear masks for 10 days and test on Thursdays in case of exposure.

The impetus for this decision may come from a new statistic: 95% of the US population has some degree of immunity against Covid, according to Massetti.

“The high levels of population immunity from vaccinations and prior infections and the wide range of tools available to protect the general population and protect those at higher risk allow us to focus on protecting everyone.” people recovering from serious illness from Covid,” she said on a call with reporters on Thursday.
