“Never work for an Indian manager”: Europe-based Microsoft employee ‘warned’ in Reddit post
Microsoft is one of the world’s largest technology companies with millions of customers in almost every country. To support such a large user base, Microsoft has a huge Azure support team that helps organizations and professionals use the company’s cloud computing. Like other major technology companies around the world, Microsoft also outsources most of its customer service work to India. As technology companies’ dependence on Indian workforce increases, it turns out that tech workers in other countries are not so happy about it. In a Reddit A Microsoft employee in Europe took to Reddit to warn potential customer support staff about Indian managers.
IT employees complain about unethical behavior and biased work culture
The Microsoft One employee revealed that his manager and colleagues in India often contacted customers by phone, despite being explicitly instructed to communicate via email, in the hope of building relationships and getting 5-star reviews.
“I told my manager that this approach was problematic, but I got no response or feedback, and I didn’t get a raise or bonus despite working hard all year. No raise, no career prospects, just more support tickets to deal with. I felt like a white collar slave working under an Indian manager with a god complex who didn’t seem to value the contributions of non-Indians,” the Microsoft employee wrote in a Reddit post.
“I was promoted to this position with little to no training, just self-learning online. Most of the support staff are based in India and they only hire and promote their own staff, keeping all the money and rewards for themselves. This creates a very biased and unfair work environment where India-based staff are given priority over the rest of us,” he added.
A Microsoft support employee criticized the company’s decision to outsource critical functions to India, saying the decision created many cultural and communication challenges. He ended his post by saying he would never work for an Indian manager again and would also advise against joining the Azure support team.
Hours after the Reddit post, many other users expressed similar sentiments, with one of them saying, “Yup, that’s Microsoft for you. Management won’t make any changes. I worked in premium support before they laid everyone off and moved overseas so they could pay them 5 cornflakes a day. Five star reviews and phone calls are all they’re about. Leave. The job sucks, the experience sucks, and if you stay there too long, you won’t be able to leave.”
“Indians promoting Indians. That’s basically all Microsoft does. If one more person says ‘hello’ I’m going to go autistic,” one user quipped.
