Netflix drops One Piece Live-Action poster, announces release date
Netflix has shown the first images of live-action One Piece, and its attractions are certainly familiar to anime fans. Based on the hugely popular (and popular serial) manga of the same name, One Piece will be a pirate adventure starring Iñaki Godoy as Monkey D. Luffy, an explorer searching for treasure precious treasures to make a name for himself and achieve immortality as the next pirate king. It will also launch in 2023, which is big news.
The poster itself features Godoy wearing the series’ famous straw hat, as well as the red vest associated with Luffy’s character. The art also includes the silhouettes of several other “Straw Hats” – Luffy’s associates – including fan favorites like Sanji, Usopp, Nami, and Roronoa Zoro.
Steven Maeda is the show’s writer, host, and executive producer, best known for Lost and The X-Files. Screenwriter and executive producer Matt Owens has worked on Agents of SHIELD and Luke Cage. The manga’s original author, Eiichiro Oda, is also the executive producer of the project.
Netflix’s announcement makes it clear that the live-action One Piece will be out sometime in 2023, but we don’t know exactly when we’ll have it this year. Netflix’s other live-action anime adaptations have enjoyed mixed success, with Death Note and Cowboy Bebop being the most notable examples. Recently original Cowboy Bebop creator Shinchiro Watanabe stated that he hadn’t seen the adaptation, saying he quickly determined that it was “clearly not Cowboy Bebop.”
