MANILA, Philippines — University of St. Benilde damaged Jose Rizal University’s return, 92-79, in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Wednesday.

The Heavy Bombers’ five-game winning streak was also broken by the Blazers, who improved to 9-2.

“With the way we played today, I am satisfied. JRU is a good team, maybe we took a break because they came from COVID, the key players are out and they may have run out of gas, but I still think they are the final four contenders,” coach Charles Tiu said.

JRU, the team that went on a 5-3 record, did not play for 18 days due to a health and safety protocol violation.

Will Gozum scored a career-high 34 points and eight rebounds en route to the win. The lead for MVP also helped the Blazers defend in the third quarter, where they limited the JRU to just 15 points.

Benilde forced the Heavy Bomber to hit 19 teammate spins while also scoring eight steals and three interceptions overall.

The other three Blazers that finished with double numbers were Migs Corteza, Miguel Oczon and Jimboy Pasturan hitting 13, 12 and 10 respectively. Oczon also tied 10 boards for double performance.

Ry Dela Rosa was scored 26 points after a phase lost the ball. John Amores and Joshua Guiab are 19 and 12 respectively.
