MANILA, Philippines — Hit by the coronavirus late last year, San Beda only regrouped to practice as a complete team a few weeks ago in time for the start of the NCAA men’s basketball competition.

It barely showed late Saturday as the Season 95 runner-up beat Lyceum, 84-76, placing its title bid high at La Salle Greenhills Gym.

If he were to rate the Red Lions’ readiness, coach Boyet Fernandez gave his teams “six to seven out of 10,” as they only started formal training in early February.

Ralph Penuela and John Bryle Bahio each scored 12 points while Winston Ynot added 10 points for San Beda to avenge the final defeat at the hands of Letran at the end of 2019.

Enoch Valdez led the Pirates with 22 points but in the end their system couldn’t match the Red Lions despite having built up pre-season.

Fernandez said: “We had a hard time in our first game, I credit Lyceum for the big fight. “They have new people, a new coach (Gilbert Malabanan) and a new system. So it took us some time to adjust.”

“But I’m happy with the way my boys have adjusted, we’ve committed a lot of innings tonight and hopefully we’ll do something in the next games,” Fernandez added. .
