MANILA, Philippines — San Beda claimed a second straight win after defeating Arellano, 76-63, in the second round of the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena on Wednesday.
The Red Lions, who beat Emilio Aguinaldo College in their final game on October 25, improved to 8-4 for third.
James Kwekuteye clinched a game-high 16 for the Red Lions while JB Bahio scored a brace with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Justine Sanchez also got 10 points.
After the first half closed, San Beda surged forward in the third round, where they took the lead over Arellano, 29-14, largely on the defensive.
“Of course, I have to give that to the players. They made it difficult for Doromal and the others [to score]. That will always be our calling card, stop it,” speak coach Yuri Escueta, whose team also blew Arellano, 96-61, in their first encounter on October 7 last year.
The captain, who stumbled on a 5-7 card, had trouble finishing the attack with a 33% clip from the field.
Axel Doromal finished with 12 points for Arellano but made only three of 12 attempts from the field while Wilmar Oftana and Lars Sunga had 11 and 10 respectively.
