NCAA: Lyceum back on track with win over Perpetual Help
MANILA, Philippines — Lyceum went on a two-game losing streak after beating Perpetual Help, 86-82, in the second round of the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Saturday.
The Pirates turned down a potential trio forcing Jielo Razon’s game in the dying seconds for a ninth win in 14 outings.
“I told my players [in the final seconds] that I don’t want to see the three point effort from them (Perpetual Help). If it does, they have to contend for it. We had to come up with a defensive formation and it was good that Jielo missed the shot in our part,” said coach Gilbert Malabanan.
Altas dropped 10 points with 5:30 in the 4th quarter as Cedrick Abis and Carlo Ferreras knocked out shots in time to make possession of the two teams in the deficit, 80-75.
Mac Guadaña made a jump from the right to keep Perpetual Help offshore, 82-75, with 3:42 left. Guadaña takes 14 points for the Lyceum.
John Barba scored a game-high 20 along with six rebounds for the Pirates while Enzo Navarro contributed 14 with seven assists.
Ferreras and Art Roque finished with 16 points each in a loss effort while Jielo Razon won 13 points and seven pounds for Altas, who dropped to a 5-8 card.
