MANILA, Philippines—John Amores of Jose Rizal University has been expelled from the school’s basketball team after being banned indefinitely by the NCAA following an altercation.
The original JRU also issued an indefinite ban about Amores, a decision different from the NCAA, stemming from his violent behavior during the Heavy Bombers’ vs St. Benilde Blazers this past November 9.
But after a special investigation conducted by the school, the JRU decided to upgrade Amores’ punishment to expulsion from the Heavy Bomber.
Amores will not participate in any and all sporting activities with the JRU. He was also suspended from school.
Subject to this action: (i) all privileges afforded to Mr. Amores as a student-athlete have been revoked; and (ii) based on the University’s Student Handbook, he was further suspended from his classes and required to perform his community service,” the JRU said in a statement.
However, the school said it would help the striker with counseling to “deal with the stress of what has taken place in his young life”.
The development comes days after Paul Supan, the JRU representative on the league’s governing committee, publicly apologized for the incident between St. Benilde and the Heavy Bomber.
The players of St. Benilde also accused against Amores after Taine Davis and Jimboy Pasturan were injured by his punches.
The league’s Mancom will hold a press conference on the Amores situation on Wednesday after the first game between the Heavy Bombers and the Lyceum.
