MANILA, Philippines — The Lyceum switched to Enoch Valdez for the Final Four after holding off San Sebastian, 73-65, in the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at the San Juan Arena on Sunday.
Valdez flourished in the fourth quarter, where he scored 14 of his game’s top 30 as the Pirates got their first playoff since 2019.
“I am proud of them, not only me but also the other coaches. Other than that, the way he performed, that’s what we needed. The good thing about that is our trust in him and everyone,” said coach Gilbert Malabanan.
The Pirates raised their record to 11-5 and became the second team this season to secure a Four Finals seat behind Letran Knights.
Valdez, who also had 11 rebounds and 3 steals, hit key baskets including 4 straight down the road to close the game, 66-58.
JM Bravo added 10 points and eight rebounds while Enzo Navarro scored seven points, five rebounds, six assists and three steals for the Lyceum.
Romel Calahat won 19 points and nine pounds for the Chess players (6-8), who must complete their remaining matches for a place in Final Four.
