MANILA, Philippines — Arellano escaped a rugged Mapua team, 64-59, during the NCAA Season 98 men’s basketball tournament at San Juan Arena on Sunday.
The captain overcame the absence of Cade Flores, who fouled in the dying minutes of the game.
“Almost all teams [in the NCAA] I’m physically good so my team needs to wake up in the fourth inning. I’m glad they did,” said Arellano head coach Cholo Martin.
“We all know Cade is an important part of the team, but I’m glad the others stood up,” he added.
Flores, who finished with 14 points and 11 reb0 returned, was called up for his last foul with 2:06 still and with Arellano defending a 59-54 lead.
The Cardinals pulled in the third round, 59-56, behind a basket by Paolo Hernandez with 1:18 remaining.
Axel Doromal and Shane Menina created important points for the Captain with Menina hitting three daggers at his former team, 64-56, with 28.7 ticks as their team improved to 4-3 . Both add up for 29 points.
Hernandez scored twice with 14 points and 11 goals while Arvin Gamboa scored 11 for Mapua, still without a win after seven games. Warren Bonifacio and Adrian Nocum each add 10 to the Cardinals.
