NBCUniversal boss expects Disney to write big check for Hulu

Disney counted Hulu among its properties when bragging about its streaming numbers, but the truth is it’s sharing the service with Comcast right now. The telecom giant is interested in the sale and is expecting a “big check” from Disney, according to hollywood reporter.

Comcast currently holds a 33% stake in Hulu, with Disney owning the rest. Starting January 2024, House of Mouse can buy Comcast and take full control of the service.

“We think [Hulu] It’s worth a lot of money because it’s sold on a full control basis, as if you were auctioning it off,” NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell said at a recent conference. “And I think there’s no indication that anything else is going to happen other than Disney writing us a big check for the property in ’24.”

The executives of both companies have been playing mergers with services in recent months, trying to lobby for an ideal market value for the service. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts said that Comcast would likely be interested in Hulu if it went up for sale, while former Disney CEO Bob Chapek said he would buy a stake in Comcast sooner rather than later.

THR reports that Chapek’s predecessor (and successor) Bob Iger recently described himself as “very, very comfortable with every single property we have” at a town hall recently, so it remains to be seen where Hulu will go anytime soon.
