NEW YORK — The Brooklyn Nets appointed longtime assistant Jacque Vaughn as their new head coach on Wednesday, amid a tumultuous time in the franchise’s history.
The team suspended defense of star Kyrie Irving for at least five games last week for not denying anti-Semitism after posting a link on Twitter to a 2018 commentary, one he claimed. guard. He later apologized.
A few days earlier, the Nets abruptly parted ways with head coach Steve Nash after an unsatisfactory start to the season, to appoint Vaughn as interim coach.
If Irving is given a five-game ban, he will next be available to play on November 13 on his way to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Vaughn, who won the National Basketball Association (NBA) championship as a player for the San Antonio Spurs in 2007, joined the Nets as an assistant coach in 2016.
He previously served as the head coach of the Orlando Magic.
