NBA: Spurs sink shorthanded Bucks, snap five-game slide

Keldon Johnson picked up 29 points as the home side San Antonio Spurs used a terrifying early fourth quarter game to put their stamp on a 111-93 win over the short-term Milwaukee Bucks on Friday to clinch a five-game losing streak.

Milwaukee played without two top scorers, Giannis Antetokounmpo (left knee) and Jrue Holiday (right ankle sprain), for the second straight game.

Spurs took a seven-point lead going into the final half and took the game out of reach on a 16-5 run to give them a 99-81 lead. Johnson had seven points and Devin Vassell scored five in that decisive stretch.

Vassell added 22 points, with Jakob Poeltl picking up 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Sochan and Doug McDermott each scoring 10 and Charles Bassey picking up 14 rebounds in the win.

Jevon Carter leads the Bucks with 21 points. Brook Lopez added 19 points, Bobby Portis accumulated 16 points and 12 rebounds and Serge Ibaka scored 11 points. Milwaukee has lost two-thirds of its past games after starting the season with a 9-0 scoreline.

The first half went back and forth, with seven draws and four changes in the lead, with the final half going to diving Vassell with a minute of play in a period that gave Spurs a two-point advantage on the road. to 31-27 leading at the end of the quarter.

San Antonio started to shorten in the second half, as Johnson picked up eight points in a span of nearly two minutes in the middle of the half, turning the four points into a 50-39 advantage at 6:12.

The Bucks fought back within six points on Carter’s free-throw with a 1:17 margin left before McDermott ran away 17 seconds later giving San Antonio a 54-46 advantage at the break.

Johnson scored 12 points in the inning to lead all players while Carter’s 10 points past Milwaukee.

Spurs pushed their lead to 21 after McDermott’s treble with 5:58 in the third half. But Milwaukee refused to pitch his tent, reeling 15 of the following 17 points to retreat in the 77-69 round after Lopez’s free-throw at 2:42. Bucks are in the 83-76 range heading into the fourth quarter.
